Peter Stratinger Revealed!

We have received several emails asking us about Peter's favorite things to do when he is not on a mission. Although very popular at school, he tends to spend a lot of his time outside of school and missions, alone. What does he like to do? Get outside and exercise by running around his neighborhood and then all the way to main street passed Joey's aunt's Apothecary. At home, Peter works out his angst over Joey on his XBox playing Call of Duty and on his PC getting lost in World of Warcraft.

Peter listens to a lot of different kinds of music too. Nickelback, Linkin Park, Green Day, Black Eyed Peas (only because he has a thing for Fergie!) are all on his iPod, but U2's Joshua Tree album is his favorite of all time!

Harriet Tubman was not her real name! Her name at birth was Araminta Ross. She changed her first name in honor of her mother "Harriet." Her last name changed from Ross to Tubman when she was briefly married to John Tubman in 1844.

The Rosses, Harriet's family, came to America from the West African Ashanti Tribe.

Is Time Travel Really Possible?

Einstein's theory of special relativity brought space and time together in a four-dimensional arrangement that he called spacetime. We know that we can travel forwards, backwards and sideways in space, so why not in time?

Ideas of time travel have existed for centuries. As we all know, no one has successfully traveled through time, but no one has been able to rule it out either.

Some physicists have extrapolated Einstein's ideas illustrating the possibility of traveling through time using tunnels called wormholes ...could that be what Joey and Peter are passing through each time they travel into the past? Could they also then go into the future?

The Ethics of Stealing

Joey technically stole The Amulet from Aunt Camille's apothecary and suffered short term consequences for those actions. She was transported to the past and forced to complete a mission as a Tempes Soudeour (Time Soldier), where she faced great peril. However, The Council of Tempus did very little to "punish" her upon the completion of her mission. A verbal reprimand was all she received.

Some could argue that by placing Peter as her partner, that was another form of punishment, but it is made clear at The Council's meeting at Stonehenge that the reason the two Soudeours were partnered was because of Joey's age, and nothing more.

The ends certainly don't justify the means. Should Joey have gotten a bigger punishment from The Council of Tempus, or from Aunt Camille? What else could they have done?

What if Aunt Camille had Joey work in the apothecary in order to "pay back" some of the wrong doing? What if The Council had made Joey go into the past and perform "community service"? What other ways can you think of?

St. Timothy's Emails

Thank you so very much to all the kids who have emailed Erika and I about "The Amulet Chronicles, Book One: The Freedom Train" from St. Timothy's School. Your questions were so interesting!

Some wanted to know about why Peter called Joey, "Mina." There's a hint in Book One! Peter says, "You don't read much, do you?" when Joey asks him why he keeps calling her that name. What do you suppose he means by that?

Another fantastic question was how we decided on the style of the cover. Our artist was painting in the 'Impressionist' style because Erika and I both love that particular era of Art History. Look it up! It's quite a fascinating time for art.

One email asked why Joey was a girl with a boy's name (her birth name is Josephine), she is forced to explain this to the Hill's, the Quaker family she stays with.

And even though it made us feel a trifle old, we even answered questions regarding our birthdays for those who were writing a report on the authors for school. Anything for our fans!

Past, Present and Future

Are the people of the past different than how people are today, and will be in the future?

In my ever so humble opinion, the people of today are just as flawed as they were in the past; not more so, and certainly not lesser so. There are still good people, bad people, and those people who you wish there were more of. There are still people who want to control everything, those who want to give everything away, and those who horde like there's no tomorrow.

All in all, I would like to see the people of the future be more peaceful, and not so quick to war. But, I suppose that's a pipe dream.

Still, what else is the future for but your hopes and dreams of what it could be?

I'd sure like to hear what your hopes and dreams for the future are, and how you hope to obtain them.

Amulet Chronicles Assignment

I have been asked to elaborate on my personal technique for writing and combating writer's block and I thought I would take this opportunity to write on this issue.

For me, to begin writing, I require peace and quiet. I wish I was one of those writers who can write while in a crowded room, or while on a bus, or even at an amusement park while sitting on a bench, but I operate at my personal best in a room all by myself. No music. No phone. Me and my computer and a clear head. And perhaps, a hot caffeinated beverage.

If I am continuing to write on a new scene of an existing work (ex. Book 2: The King's Conspiracy) I go back and read the scene before to refresh my memory as to where we left off. That usually gets my brain working enough to get started. If not, I go back two scenes. If that doesn't work...Well, I'll get to that later.

If I am starting a new piece of work, I have been known to stare at the blank screen for minutes on end for the perfect opening sentence to strike me, which more than likely gets rewritten the next day anyways.

If I am suffering writer's block, I read. I read my favorite fiction, not a magazine or even a "How To Write" book, and it doesn't even have to be in the same genre. Typically, I'll pick up Jane Austen. She's a personal favorite, and I absolutely love her use of language. Reading her for approximately twenty minutes will normally break my writer's block. I find her so inspiring!

Now, say, if after reading the scene before, reading your favorite fiction, and staring at a blank screen for a long time and you are still not able to write...Some would say to write anyways, even if it would be completely scrapped the next day. Some might say to free write for a few minutes to get the "juices flowing." If it's in class, you don't have much choice to follow that advice.

But, for me, on a day when the words escape me, I have to get away from the screen and go out and find them. I could find them in a load of laundry, in a scrubbed toilet, on a coffee break with a friend, paying the bills, picking my kids up from school, running errands, or my personal favorite, in the car (try writing notes while on the road - I don't recommend it!). Letting your mind wander while performing mundane tasks stirs up all sorts of memories and feelings you might not be able to access while so concentrated on catching them in a phrase.

You have to live your life so that you have something to write about, don't forget that, so that the next time you are staring at the screen, you have a whole list of new experiences to draw from, and a new appreciation for the gift of time to write.

Nothing cures my writing woes more than taking a break; just so long as I commit to attempt the process again the following day.

Backwards, I suppose. But, then, writers have never been known for their conformity.

Harriet Tubman Research

I was out shopping at a book store this past week, one of my favorite past times, when I happened upon an American Civil War Pop-up book. Immediately, I looked at the Index to locate Harriet Tubman. After flipping to the page where she was mentioned, I was shocked at what I read. Their research was wrong!

According to our source, Dr. Kate Larson from Simmons College and considered the foremost expert on Harriet Tubman, Harriet saved approximately sixty (that's 6-0) people through the Underground Railroad - not 300! That grossly exaggerated figure came from a biography written in 1869 by a woman named Sarah Bradford, and is incorrect.

The Pop-up book also mentioned a reward in the amount of $40,000. Not completely true! The reward for Harriet's capture appeared during the Civil War while she was spying for the Union, and not while she was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. In fact, while she was taking people to freedom (on the Freedom Train, as she called it) no one in authority in the South knew her identity. We are also uncertain, if the amount of $40,000 isn't an exaggeration as well, since that was the number that also appeared in Sarah Bradford's infamous biography.

Be advised - all those kid's out there doing a report on Harriet Tubman - check your sources!

Reading the World X

We have just returned from a very exciting conference at University of San Francisco called 'Reading the World X' where we had the distinguished honor of meeting Jack Zipes, Peter Sis, Laurence Yep, Bob Barner, Milly Lee, Margaret Chang - and so many others! My head is swimming with inspiration. We want to extend our thanks to Marianne Halpin for including us in the likes of such genius, it was a humbling and life-changing experience.

We also had the honor of conducting our own workshop on self-publishing with Amazon.com and our trials and tribulations writing "The Amulet Chronicles, Book One: The Freedom Train" and also about the new research concerning Harriet Tubman. Amulet Valentine's Day

Erika posed a very intriguing question to me today. With whom would the readers like to see Camille and/or Joey celebrating Valentine's Day?

For me, Joey is the toughest to place. I am sure there are those who wish for Joey's Valentine to be Peter, though I am also certain that idea would make Joey cringe. However, if I had to venture a guess, I am fairly certain she would like to be Johnny Depp's Valentine.

As for Camille, being a more mature individual, but free spirited and non-conformist as well, I think she deserves a debonair but off-beat rustic type. Any ideas? Matthew McConaughy perhaps? Eh, I'm just not sure.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. In the meantime, be good to your Valentine and if there isn't one this year, wear black and watch war movies tonight...One of the best Valentine's day I had in my youth was just like that!

Joey Thompson, (not to be confused with Mr. Joey Thompson from the Titanic's passenger list, or author Josephine Thompson!) is a misunderstood fourteen year old with a chip on her shoulder from "The Amulet Chronicles, Book One: The Freedom Train."

Having been a bit of an outcast during my own high school days, I tend to relate to her most. While Erika, a former latch-key kid, relates greatly to Peter Stratinger, Joey's verbal sparring nemesis and eventual time travel partner.

In life, I often find that those people that challenge our minds the most, are those we should get to the know better. A good debate among friends can be an excellent learning and fun experience! So, the next time someone says something you don't agree with, say something (respectfully, of course) and let the debate begin. You might learn something, and even understand things from a new perspective.

It is because Joey listens to Peter's advice about time travel, that she is able to navigate in the past effectively. Imagine how poorly things would have gone if she hadn't!

St. Timothy's School and The Amulet Chronicles

Both had a passion for children's programming; Ms. Lewis worked for many years as a Development Executive, at Sony, Fireworks Entertainment, Fox and now G4TV, and Ms. Tibbets as a freelance script writer for such shows as "The Zach Files" on ABC Family and "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High" on NBC/Discovery Kids. In 2005, Ms. Lewis & Ms. Tibbets teamed up to create "The Amulet Chronicles, Book One: The Freedom Train" which was later to become "Book One: The Journey Home." Both writers reside in the Los Angeles area with their families.
